Hi there, I’m Frank Berto
I have had the privilege of serving Jesus with the “Living Hope” family since 2014. My wife Cheryl and I asked God for the delight of serving Jesus in a fellowship that looked like and cared for the people of the neighbourhood that it was located in. Living Hope is God’s answer to that prayer. (And it’s close enough for me to walk to work.)
I became a follower of Jesus when he delivered me from addiction and confusion on my first day working on Whistler Mountain over 30 years ago. Jesus put me on my feet and gave my life a meaning and joy that I long for others to share. I’ve served churches in Whistler, Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey since that time as well as spent many years in various other occupations (retail sales, heavy equipment operating, etc.)
I have 2 teenage daughters who daily remind me of the joy of family and my fallibility as a follower of JesusJ. Cheryl is both a social worker and counselor and shares my deep desire to see people transformed by Jesus’ love in the power of His Spirit.
I enjoy playing the guitar (probably too loudly – a product of my generation), weightlifting and meeting new people. Let me take you for a cup of coffee and talk about the meaning of life and Jesus’ love for you.
Keep the faith,
My name is Alyssa Hordyk, and I have joined our Living Hope staff in March of 2021 as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator, and in Spring of 2022 added the role of co-leader in our Youth Ministry (together with Bless).
I grew up at Living Hope where my parents were founding members. As such, the Children’s Ministry has come to hold a very special place in my heart. I never thought that I would be where I am today, because I was “that kid” who cried at absolutely every new experience -- just ask my old Sunday School Teachers!
Through our yearly Summer Day Camp Programs, I was given opportunity to serve the church with things like painting and decorating for the day camps. This eventually led to becoming a Director of our day camps for 5 summers. I am forever grateful for these experiences because not only did they help develop my teaching, administration, and leadership skills, but they also grew the passion I have today to work with children and youth.
I am excited to get to know your child(ren) and teach them about Jesus!
My name is Carla Hordyk. My husband Richard and I are founding members of Living Hope and have been delighted to serve Jesus in this local community of believers since 1994. I have been involved in various volunteer roles including Worship Team, Overseers, and Small Group Ministry. Most of my career I have spent in a corporate setting, working my way into executive administration. In the latter 6 months of my corporate role, I began to hear the Lord calling me out, but had no idea how it would transpire. Long story short, the company I had worked for ended up restructuring, and my position came to a close shortly after which the office of Associate Pastor of Discipleship & Administration became available here. Having attended Columbia Bible College as a young adult, my schooling came flooding back, and my passion for sharing God’s love through His Word grew. As administrator, I enjoy organizing and supporting from behind the scenes, and as an associate pastor, I enjoy building relationships, resourcing our Young Adults and Small Groups, preaching, and co-teaching classes in baptism and membership. Richard and I have been blessed with 2 daughters, Alyssa and Kelsey, who are young adults growing in their relationship with Christ. I enjoy playing piano/guitar, entertaining family, friends (and new friends!), trying out recipes, watching old “Me TV” type shows and reading.
I am Bless, and I have been serving as Karen Youth & Young Adults Pastor ever since 2015. I have been attending Living Hope ever since I came to Canada 10 years ago. My ethnicity is called Karen (an ethnic minority group from Myanmar: Burma). Most Karen people have been attending Living Hope Church ever since their settlement in BC, Canada; therefore, I have had the privilege to serve as a Karen minister between the English speaking congregation and my Karen community. I have been attending Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford for the past five years and graduated in April 2017. I lead worship once a month in the English worship service as well as twice a month in the Karen service. Besides doing all these productive and required ministries, my main passion is to build friendships and share Jesus with others around me; doesn’t matter who it is.
Despite the differences in cultures and ideologies, I do my best to break the boundaries between the English speaking congregation and the Karen community by being a bridge who communicates back and forth. On Saturday evening I lead a Bible Study in my cultural community where Karen Youth & Young Adults participate and learn about Jesus. I desire to see the younger generation seeking the Kingdom of God and following Jesus wholeheartedly.
There are four people in my family: Dad, Mom, brother, and I. On my spare time, I like to play guitar, bass and jam with my family because we all love music. If I’m not at Church, I am mostly in the gym working out because I like to stay fit and healthy.
All you have to know about me is that I am “Friendly” and…trust me, you will easily become friends with me after a 2 min discussion. I just love getting to know people and I am approachable.
